A Powerful Noise

On Thursday night I went with my friends Erin and Marie (I refer to them as my "blind date friends" as we were set up by mutual friends when I moved to Denver) to celebrate International Women's Day by watching the movie A Powerful Noise. The movie was shown across the country at various theaters simultaneously and included a live discussion with Madelin Albright, Natalie Portman, Christy Turlington Burns, Nicholas Krostof, and Dr. Helene Gayle at the end and was hosted by Ann Curry.

It was a very inspiring movie seeking to share the knowledge and belief that women hold the power to change communities for the better. When women are repressed, abused, ignored, or violated, sustainable growth and development will be hard to foster. "Educate a woman and you educate a whole village." However, the movie wasn't just about educating women, it was also about what happens when female populations are given the access, tools, and training to allow them to become active members in the economy and the political world and it attempted to demonstrate that women are often the needed and effective leaders of social movements.

This movie was not an ultra-feminist movie, it was a demonstration that both sexes are equally valuable and also allowed viewers to consider the thought that perhaps some "important" roles may be better conducted by the portion of the world population which is still, and always has been, more in tuned with family and social needs. Just a thought. Go watch the trailer and download the film: http://www.apowerfulnoise.org/trailer.html
